Influenza A(H1N1) cases reported in over half of European countries

Since the update of 29 May, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Hungary and Luxembourg have reported new laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza A(H1N1). As of 09:00 Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) on 5 June, 29 of the 53 countries in the WHO European Region had reported a total of 954 cases to WHO/Europe. The number of reported cases nearly doubled between 29 May and 5 June.
The breakdown of laboratory-confirmed cases in the European Region is: Austria (2), Belgium (13), Bulgaria (1), Cyprus (1), the Czech Republic (2), Denmark (4), Estonia (3), Finland (4), France (57), Germany (43), Greece (5), Hungary (3), Iceland (1), Ireland (9), Israel (42), Italy (38), Luxembourg (1), the Netherlands (6), Norway (9), Poland (4), Portugal (2), Romania (8), Russian Federation (3), Slovakia (3), Spain (231), Sweden (13), Switzerland (10), Turkey (8), and the United Kingdom (428).
Of the countries that had reported cases of influenza A(H1N1) by 29 May, most reported further cases this week. Cases significantly increased in Spain and the United Kingdom, with localized outbreaks in schools and military academies accounting for a substantial proportion. Over 50% of the confirmed cases in the Region have been locally acquired.
